  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from R. L. MILLER -- Some People Ain't Gonna Like This One : A big part of the story is Chinese government officials persecuting indigenous Uyghur people under the pretext that they are inferior to Han Chinese. There's a scene where two bureaucrats visit an Uyghur home to inspect it on grounds that an absent family member--sister of the head of the household and mother of the child living there with her aunt--is a traitor to the People's Government. One of them takes a shower while there and pointedly leaves behind his bath soap for his Uyghur hosts' personal use, stating that Uyghur hygiene products aren't as good in terms of cleanliness. The little girl is outraged by this obvious bigotry, but her aunt in a stern it-is-what-it-is lecture cautions her against showing that outrage. If this sort of thing happened anywhere in the West, it would be condemned as systemic racism, but certain elements here in the West who have a lot of political power nowadays believe racism of any kind is practiced only at home in their own country. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from belinda g -- Clark is now 75? Ryan in his 4th term? : I really liked this book and it was really well-researched. It's hard to put it down once you get to the last 100 pages. Deep dive into culture and how the ChiComms subjugate ethnic groups and get away with it. Very real depiction and so believable. I'll buy them as long as they produce them. However, as much Jack Ryan novels have been a part of my life for over 30 years, at some point his continuing on as POTUS (pre Smart phones) is starting to strain credulity. The books keep up with the tech but it has been many moons since he defeated Ed Kealty and lots has changed in the world. I believe I had my brand new IPhone 2 at that time. How much longer can Foley, Arnie, and the loyal crew go on? Clark is 75 now? Chavez is 50? Damn. They can work in a lot once Jack and Kathy are out of 1600. Challenges to the Campus. Jack actually going on missions. Jr getting involved in politics? It can go on forever. As much as I believe John Patrick. Ryan was the greatest POTUS who ever lived, all good things have to come to an end at some point. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Susan Cameron -- Not as good as others : The hendley group sets out to find a scientist who has created a system which makes a submarine’s noise undetectable. In the Bering sea, there seems to be a submarine in trouble and the scientist is aboard. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2020 )
  • from N. Gargano -- VINE VOICE : Marc Cameron never disappoints ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Linda Schmidt- -- Marc Cameron creates a fun way to learn! : Marc Cameron carries on the Tom Clancy tradition of exciting plot with lots of informative current events. In this President Jack Ryan administration, the free world’s leader must deal with communist China which is hiding a special submarine from the West. John Clark, Domingo Chavez and the team must go secretly to China to rescue a woman scientist who can help the stranded sub. The team travels over much of China and helps as well as is helped by the persecuted Uyghurs. Shadow of the Dragon is full of action and information ( Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Jake Thompson -- The Clancy Saga Continues, But Not At The Same Level As Before : It has been seven years since the fateful passing of one of the greats in the thriller genre, Tom Clancy. Yet, his estate, with multiple authors, keeps the Jack Ryan series alive their own novels, in addition to the off-shoot “The Campus” series involving protagonist turned United States President’s son, Jack Ryan Junior (Jr.). Graciously splashing the name of each novel switching between Ryan and his operative son, the era of Clancy continues to live on. In Shadow of The Dragon, Marc Cameron delivers another blend of the Ryan family in another attempt of covert operations and joint terrorism attempting to spurn the world and throw the United States into chaos, forcing the hand of John Patrick Ryan to do what he does best, and act appropriately. The writing, while superb by Cameron, falls short in the vein that the detail of previous novels may not be present and that the story moved quickly. While keeping true with the carousel of characters, old and new, it is clear that the stories are aging with the characters and that it brings to the question of when it all may come to an end. For now, readers can take comfort in reading the next story of the Jack Ryan juggernaut and be sufficiently pleased until the next round of novels in 2021. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from William P. Knill -- Up to the usual standard : the convolutions between the different countries/organisations and their different characters keep your mind active. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 13, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from A keen reader -- tedious and fragmented : Starts with an accident on a Chinese sub which sounds promising. But then there are different story lines, including a mole in the US with it seems 30 different characters to keep track of. (there's a list in the beginning of the book, running to 3 pages...) President Jack Ryan barely features, and his son Jack Ryan Jr even less. Needless to point out, almost a all the Chinese characters are baddies, and all the US people are goodies, except for the mole. Tom Clancy's name should not be associated with this book -- Clancy wrote much better stories. And Jack Ryan should not e mentioned either. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Poppalong -- Quite Boring : I really don't know how I managed to finish the book - other than wanting to get to the end that is. If it was a dessert you would call it stodgy, I found my self skipping whole paragraphs the plot and writing thereof was so geriatric. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 1, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Richard T. -- Bitty : Started well then became a little complicated, Marc obviously knows his weaponry and insight into military and politics. The plot was okay but the submarine was a bit of a RED herring. Not your best storyline. Jack Ryan played a backseat in this book of the series. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Hits all the right buttons : Great pace, all the characters follow the Clancy mould. I think we can say that Tom Clancy would have also given this 5 stars. Jack Ryan is in good hands. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 24, 2021 )
