When most think of cybersecurity thoughts tend to trend towards security technologies such as firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, web security appliances, etc. While the latter is certainly an important aspect of a cybersecurity program they are only part of what we hope to be an effective cybersecurity program. Dr. Hasib rightly asserts the cybersecurity must become part of an organizational culture that is inculcated on a consistent basis. Moreover cybersecurity leaders must understand an organizations culture and business that a cybersecurity program is designed to support. We cannot be effective leaders without understanding an organization’s mission, core competencies, financials, and competitors and using this information to design and implement cybersecurity architecture that complements and enables an organization for success. While technology is important, he explains why the human element is key to an organization's success in approaching cybersecurity. As a cybersecurity leader, one must have a complete understanding of the organization's mission and foster innovation among employees. Cybersecurity Leadership: Powering the Modern Organization is proving to be an invaluable resource for my research on organizational solutions to cybersecurity training and awareness. Dr. Hasib's passion about the topic comes across in his writing. If you ever have the opportunity to attend one of his academic talks, I highly recommend you do so! Cybersecurity is clearly explained, where the book covers not only technical aspects for an IT audience but also for management/leadership audiences as well as for the cybersecurity professional in general. The roles of the CIO and the CISO are well defined as the author explains definitions based on personal experiences. The author includes comparisons of CIO/CISO functionality with other C-level positions. The basic attributes of security (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability) are addressed throughout the book. Of special interest is the emphasis the author makes on ‘doing the right thing’ for employees at all levels of an organization/institution by following good ethical practices. He talks a lot about building up a security culture and rightly so. The explanation is crisp and clear. In fact I was so overwhelmed by the book that I changed the title of my book which I compiled for Peerlyst from "52 Influential Infosec Blogger and Speakers" to "52 Influential Cyber Security Bloggers and Speakers". This is the key value, the book "Cybersecurity Leadership" - written by Dr. Mansur Hasib has brought into the Cyber domain. This is a must read book for all practitioners, leaders, and the cyber evangelists. I reviewed the book as an assignment in my doctoral program with all critical minds without bias, and I can say it is ever of great value. Integrity and ethical values are fundamental ingredients towards achieving Cyber Hygiene.
